Rudi's Gluten Free Review & Giveaway

I was recently surprised with a very kind package from Rudi's Gluten Free Bakery. It contained a loaf of their original gluten free bread, a bag of their multigrain hot dog rolls & a bag of their multigrain hamburger buns. Right on time for Labor Day Weekend cook outs! Read on for my review of the products and for your chance to win a FREE loaf coupon accompanied by a really handy sandwich box !

A note about the company:

Rudi's started as an organic bakery 35 years ago in Boulder, Colorado. Their company tenet is that "at the heart of it all, we’re driven by our belief that living a healthy life leads to happiness". None of Rudi's products have artificial ingredients, chemicals or preservatives. This is a big deal these days when you can find processed corn and genetically engineered soy in nearly everything we eat . I really like that I know what all of the ingredients are on their product labels and that none of them are chemicals.

Rudi's products can be found in the following Boston Area stores:

Wholefoods Market
Shaws Super Markets
Harvest Coop in JP

Original Gluten Free Bread:

If you've read my post comparing the major gluten free bread brands, you know that Rudi's Multigrain is my favorite weekend treat bread. It's soft, sumptuous and great as the integral part of my Sunday breakfast sandwich. I had never tried the original before, but was pleasantly surprised. All three items were shipped to me unfrozen, which was a change from how I usually get my gluten free bread. Normally, I buy it from the freezer section and wind up having to thaw it. You don't have to microwave or toast this bread, but I found that I like it best that way. Even the tastiest and most popular gluten free breads I know are still a little crumbly if you don't "prep" them first. It's their nature, however, there's a way to solve this. I keep mine in the freezer and when I'm ready to eat it I either:

1. Wrap it in a paper towel and microwave it for 15- 30 seconds at a time. Keep checking if it's thawed before adding more time. Too much will leave your bread hard and chewy. Let it cool off before cutting into it or it will stick together.

OR

2. Place your frozen bread in the toaster oven just long enough to thaw it/ warm it up a bit. You can keep toasting it for toast or just let it cool off for that "fresh" texture. You probably already know this, but make sure you're using a dedicated gluten free toaster before doing this. You don't want gluteny bread crumbs sticking to your bread.

I'm not a scientist or even a baker, but there's something about gently heating up the frozen bread that wipes out any dryness or crumbliness. I pack a sandwich almost everyday and have never felt like I was missing out on "good" bread.

Multigrain Hot Dog Rolls:

I've tried a few other brands of hot dog rolls and these are my favorite. I really love the taste of the Rudi's Multigrain products. They're hearty and slightly sweet with a good texture and just enough bread to hold a hot dog. Other products I've tried consisted of so much bread that you could barely taste what was in it. That's not the case with Rudi's. To use them, just heat them up using the instructions I gave you above or any other way you've found that works for you.

Multigrain Hamburger Buns:

The same comments I made about the hot dog buns are good for the hamburger rolls. The rolls are multigrain, tasty and perfectly sized. I'm bringing these with me to New Hampshire this weekend for some tasty Labor Day cook out burgers with my family!

  5. I follow by email and subscribed(what can I say, I"m in SW-NH and so excited to find our blog via recommendation from Maggie at Rudi's).

I really love to grill a portobello cap and serve it with a bit of mayo mixed with diced roasted red pepper, more roasted red pepper slices, lettuce and tomato. I haven't had one since going G.F. and I can't wait to try it with Rudi's burger rolls which I've just recently discovered.

  6. I actually haven’t had a hamburger or hotdog with a bun since we found out I have Celiac’s – 3 yrs. ago. All the Styrofoam looking buns have scared me away from thinking they were worth the try at $5/bag. I really want to try these!! They sound amazing! Rudi's multigrain is my favorite as well.

My favorite gfree sandwich is homemade Aus Jus. We make the Aus Jus from scratch out of beef stock, herbs and veggies; then soak thinly sliced beef lunchmeat in it to absorb the flavor. The bread gets lightly toasted in the oven first; then layered with the beef meat and swiss cheese. After another quick trip in the oven (open face) to slightly brown the cheese, it’s ready to be sliced diagonally and served with a side of fries & the Aus Jus – for dipping of course!
